• 2003 Toyota Hiace Camper Van
• 3.0L Turbo 4WD
• 4 cylinder diesel engine
• 177,600 km
• Right hand drive
• Dual airbag
• 7 seats
• All season/all terrain tires with lots of tread left
• High quality diesel heater (conveniently connected to the engine’s diesel tank)
• Extensive 600 W solar setup (more info below)
• Factory high roof (6’2” interior)
• Extra long wheel base
• Burner stove (propane setup and tank included and can also use butane)
• Electric fridge with freezer shelf
• Large stainless steel sink with water pump setup
• Outside power outlet for charging (you likely won’t ever need it because the solar is so good)
• Lots of storage space
• Tons of additional accessories (more info below)

Everything runs great, and I’ve never had any engine problems. It accelerates like a van half its size. Toyota really knows how to make 'em.

𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐩:
======================
• 600 watts of flexible solar panels covering the entire roof
• 400 AH auxiliary lithium battery power (two 200 AH batteries)
• 2000 W inverter/charger (you could run a power saw, blender, fridge, fans, and charge all your devices at the same time)
• 60 Amp solar controller
• Battery monitor (tells you how much juice you have left)
• Distribution panel (with custom 3D printed covers)

To give you a sense of how much solar this is, I lived and worked as a programmer full time out of this vehicle on the island, and for 10 months of the year I ran completely off solar and didn’t even think about power usage. For December and January, all I had to do was plug into an outlet and charge the lithium batteries once every week or two (you can do this for free at the Walmart EV station). I wired up the solar panels in a series-parallel configuration to maximize efficiency during imperfect sunlight conditions (e.g. partial shade, dirty panels, or low horizon sun). I’m more than happy to chat about any electrical or solar questions you may have.

I spent over $6,600 on the custom solar, electrical, and battery setup (not including my time), and I can share links to all the products I bought if you’d like. Watch the video linked above for more details.

𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐝:
=========================
• Side racks (SeaSuckers, $680 new)
• Middle seat headrests (not shown in pictures or videos)
• Tire chains
• Jumper cables
• Wheel security lock
• Cable for charging the batteries from a standard outlet
• Desk extension (really nice if you’re planning to do serious computer work in the van)
• Nice hammock and hooks to hang it inside the van (great for napping and hanging out)
• Kitchen stuff (pot, pan, wooden plates, etc.)
• Tie-down straps (for surfboards, kayaks, canoe, etc.)
• Tri-folding mattress (really comfy, and ideal fitting for bed space and upper storage)
• Small broom and dust pan
• Smoke & CO detector
• Fire extinguisher

There’s also a TV monitor extension arm that I used to hold my second monitor while working. Even if you don’t use it for a second monitor or TV, the arm is still a great feature to hold in whatever gear or clothing you may put in the cargo storage nets on the side wall.

I also installed a cargo net on the ceiling with a couple other hooks that you can use to easily store a guitar. This setup will securely store your guitar on the ceiling in the perfect spot where you never stand up fully due to the seats (it will stay there safely locked in even on super bumpy roads).

𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
=================
Full transparency: I bought this vehicle for $38,000 in 2021 when it had 152,000 km on it. I was the first North American owner after it was imported from Japan, and I’ve done a number of modifications to make it more comfortable, spacious, and to increase its off-grid capabilities (installed a much bigger sink, new stove, the whole solar and aux battery setup, bought side racks, and bed). In total, I’ve put in over $8,000 into this beauty of a van.
The vehicle now has 177,600 km on it, so I believe $40,000 is a very reasonable price.
